Background
Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed separatist forces in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the largest war in Europe since 1945.
Most of the fighting takes place along a long front line in the east and south, while both sides carry out long-range drone and missile strikes, including on energy infrastructure. Ukraine relies heavily on military aid from Western partners, and efforts to negotiate an end to the war have repeatedly stalled.
