Background

On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Israel responded with a large-scale military campaign in Gaza, which has caused tens of thousands of deaths and a severe humanitarian crisis.

Fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon escalated sharply in 2024 before a ceasefire in November that year. Ceasefires in Gaza have paused the fighting at times, but the situation across the region remains fragile.
