Background

The Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Pakistan accuses the Taliban government of sheltering the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), whose attacks inside Pakistan have increased sharply since then; the Taliban deny this.

Tensions have led to clashes along the disputed Durand Line border and Pakistani air strikes inside Afghanistan, alternating with mediated talks and ceasefires.
