Editor's take

Russians amongst their prolonged war against Ukraine have repeatedly faced calls for the cutting off and blockade of Kaliningrad which is an exclave facing the baltic sea and bordering Lithuania and Poland (NATO members). It holds huge economic and strategic significance for Kremlin as it provides it with a port on the Baltic and serves as the HQ for the Navy's Baltic fleet. For India, this comes under great pressure on itself to lessen its reliance on Russian crude from the American as well as European leaders. India needs to pull off a highly risky diplomatic balancing act as it faces repeated calls for secondary sanctions. Further any such event or an aggression hurts the global financial stability as well as India ultimately imports for most of its energy needs.

1Russia Sends Nuclear Warning to NATO as Tensions Rise in the Baltic

Moscow accused the alliance of a "dangerous and reckless course" that entailed "high risks of the outbreak of a direct armed conflict."

Why it matters: Russian exclave of Kaliningrad serves as the HQ of its Baltic fleet and has a significant military build up too as it has Iskander-M and Bastion missile systems based on it besides the S-400 Triumf air defence system. It also has a very important economic value to Kremlin as it is a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and has had several manufacturing industries within the region. Thus, any blockage or intervention in the same remains a red line for Moscow not to be crossed by the west.

2U.S. Navy tests Blackbeard hypersonic missile aboard Super Hornet to advance long-range strike capability for its carrier fleet

The U.S. Navy has tested Castelion’s Blackbeard hypersonic strike missile aboard an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, advancing development of a long-range weapon for carrier-based fighters.

Why it matters: Blackbeard's test provides the US with a low cost hypersonic strike capabilities against the traditional hypersonic options. It further gives the US Navy's carrier fleet a greater strike reach and the ability to do saturation attacks economically as it uses the same legacy delivery platforms too i.e. the FA-18 Super Hornets without much modifications and the need for an entirely new platform.
